From conflict in Myanmar to a new life in Thailand, Pai Pai’s journey with IKO shows how kiteboarding can create real opportunities.

Escaping Conflict, Building a Future: Pai Pai’s Journey with IKO.

Pai Pai now lives on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand. But his story begins far away in Myanmar, a country that has been in a difficult situation in recent years, especially after the military took control in 2021. Since then, the country has experienced political instability, widespread violence, and serious economic challenges, forcing many people to leave their homes.

Like many people from Myanmar, Pai Pai had to leave his country to find safety and work. He arrived in Thailand with almost nothing, facing an uncertain and challenging path. Life was hard, and the future was unclear. Yet today, he is taking a big step forward: becoming a certified IKO Instructor.

His goal is simple but powerful: to build a better life and reunite his family in Thailand. His journey shows how kiteboarding can truly change lives!

Leaving Myanmar to Build a New Life

Pai Pai arrived in Thailand with almost nothing. At the time he entered the country illegally, without money and without clear prospects. Life was uncertain, but he knew he had to try.

His reason was simple: he wanted better work opportunities and a way to support his family back home, like many migrant workers in Southeast Asia.

The hardest part was not the work or the uncertainty. It was the distance.
“The hardest part of my journey was leaving my family and friends.”

Over time, Pai Pai slowly built a more stable life. Today his situation is very different. He now has a passport and a legal work permit in Thailand. Years of persistence and hard work helped him reach this point. But the real turning point came when he discovered kiteboarding.

The Day Kiteboarding Changed Everything.

Pai Pai first discovered kiteboarding while working as a beach boy at a kite school on Koh Phangan. It was the first time he had ever seen the sport.
“I was amazed.”

Watching the colorful kites flying above the water and riders gliding across the sea left a strong impression. At that moment, though, he never believed that kiteboarding could become part of his life.

Everything changed when his employer gave him a surprising condition. If he wanted to keep working at the school, he would need to learn kiteboarding as well. What seemed like a challenge quickly became a passion.

As soon as he started riding, Pai Pai fell in love with the sport.
“I live, eat, and breathe kiteboarding.”

Kiteboarding soon became much more than a job skill. It became a lifestyle and a way to support his family. The sport that once seemed unreachable turned into the opportunity that shaped his future.

Becoming an IKO Instructor

Today Pai Pai is taking the next step in his journey: becoming a certified IKO Instructor at Accrokite Koh Phangan.

This opportunity became possible thanks to the IKO Giving Back Program, an initiative designed to support talented kiters who may not have the financial means to pursue professional training.

For Pai Pai, the IKO certification represents much more than a professional milestone.
“It means the world to me.”

The training has helped him deepen his knowledge of kiteboarding and grow as a kiter. But it has also created new possibilities for the future.
“It has improved my knowledge and passion for kiteboarding, but it has also allowed me to earn more money and support my family much better.”

As an IKO Instructor, he can support his family and build a future, while Giving Back highlights how the kiteboarding community transforms lives.

The Community That Helped Him Grow

Behind Pai Pai’s progress stands a strong community of people who believed in him.

  • Tony Sullivan, an IKO Instructor from the UK who has lived in Koh Phangan for many years. When Tony first met Pai Pai, one thing stood out immediately.
“His smile, friendliness, and willingness to help.”

Later, when the kite school where Pai Pai worked closed due to financial difficulties, he suddenly faced an uncertain future again. That was the moment Tony decided he wanted to help. To support Pai Pai, Tony created a fundraising campaign in his name, and in a very short time, the local kiteboarding community came together to raise the funds needed for him to attend the IKO Pro Course.

  • The Examiner of the Pro Courses, Guido Ruzzenenti, decided to do his part by waiving his own salary to contribute to Pai Pai’s participation in the Pro Course.

For Tony, community is one of the core values of kiteboarding.
“The first rule of kiteboarding is that you never kite alone.”

Kiters rely on each other for safety on the water, but that spirit also extends beyond the sport. Supporting other kiters, especially those facing challenges, is part of the culture.

  • Eric Bertrand, the owner of the IKO Center Accrokite Koh Phangan. After meeting Pai Pai, quickly recognized both his talent and his attitude.
“From the beginning, Pai Pai stood out. He’s always smiling, always motivated, and genuinely happy to be there.”

For Eric, offering him a stable job was not an act of charity.
“It was simply recognizing someone who truly deserves an opportunity.”

Beyond his riding level, Pai Pai also shows the qualities needed to become a great IKO Instructor.
“Students feel safe around him. Technique can always improve, but mindset and character are what make a great instructor.”

A Dream That Goes Beyond Thailand

Today Pai Pai’s life looks very different from when he first arrived in Thailand with nothing. He now has a stable job, a growing career in kiteboarding, and a community that supports him.

But his dream does not stop there. One day, when peace returns to Myanmar, Pai Pai hopes to go back home and share the sport that changed his life.
“My ultimate dream is one day returning home after the war and opening the first IKO Center in my country.”

His goal is not only personal success; he wants to bring kiteboarding to Myanmar and create opportunities for others who, like him, are searching for a new path. Pai Pai’s story reminds us that kiteboarding is more than a sport, it’s a global community where passion, mentorship, and opportunity can help people rebuild their lives.

Sometimes, all it takes is one chance and the power of the sport we love!
